About the event
A Double Bill of Dickensian Terror
Deep in a railway cutting, a man stands alone. A light flickers. A bell rings. And something is coming.
In The Signalman, Jacob Anderton gives a solo performance of Charles Dickens’s most celebrated ghost story: a tale of dread, premonition and the terrible weight of knowing what cannot be changed.
Then the second tale. The Ghost in the Bride’s Chamber is a two-hander for Louise Dearden and Jacob Anderton, drawn from one of Dickens’s darkest and least-known stories: a bride, a cold-hearted bargain, and a chamber where the dead will not rest.
Both stories are staged in the Wedgwood Room at the Assembly Rooms, lit only by candles. No curtain and no stage tricks: just two stories, the flicker of flame and the dark pressing in.
Directed by highly acclaimed Jake Murray. Produced by Assembly Productions. Part of Dickens Festival North.
